"Only One has Ever Died" | Poem

Only one has ever died
Jesus Christ the crucified
High aloft an ugly tree
Where the damned alone should be
What is this? God's only Son
Anger's victim, nailed and hung
There to die with all our blame
Heaped upon His shattered frame

Not the pain of nail or spear
Nor the tauntings in His ear
Made His noble soul to quake
Made His holy heart to break
No, but human guilt compiled
Burdened Him, the undefiled
Purity our sin embraced
Then eternal death He faced

Wonder of the worlds of light
Mystery so infinite
Tell me of the Savior, tell
Of the love that went to hell
